Dr. J.R. Green

Since 2012, under Dr. Green’s leadership, Fairfield County School District in partnership with families and community strives to prepare students with World Class Knowledge, World Class Skills, and Life and Career choices by providing a comprehensive, innovative, and rigorous curriculum that fosters life-long learners in a global society. Under his leadership at Fairfield County School District, he encourages a culture that is driven by the motto "Excellence through Teamwork."

Prior to joining FCSD, he served as an Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for the Chesterfield County School District. He spent several years as the Principal of Central High School in Pageland, South Carolina after serving as both an assistant high school principal and a teacher. Dr. Green strongly believes he is purposed to work with and to inspire young people. He exhibits that belief through his mentoring initiative, The Griffin Bow Tie Club. The Griffin Bow Tie Club is a partnership with members of the local community that is a comprehensive group mentoring program for middle and high school male students.

The program is centered around the 5 Wells of Leadership: Well-Read, Well-Spoken, Well- Traveled, Well-Dressed and Well-Balanced. Within a few years of joining the district Dr. Green was responsible for overseeing the construction of the new Fairfield Career and Technology Center. The center is a state-of-the-art facility with traditional classroom space, labs, automotive center, barber and cosmetology suite, and a fire fighter training center.

The center provides career and technical programs of study for students throughout the entire county. The center offers students the opportunity to develop critical skills through a combination of classes and hands-on learning experiences, which allows them to apply academics to real-world problems. In addition to the new career and technology center, the district underwent academic facility upgrades at several schools that led to the elimination of portables.

Understanding the importance of physical activity and team development through athleticism, Green led the district in the construction of the new Athletic field house and an upgrade of the district’s football field to turf. Under the leadership of Dr. Green, the FCSD became the first community to enter into a partnership with the University of South Carolina. The Accelerator for Learning and Leadership for South Carolina (ALL4SC) marshals resources from the entire university in order to address the serious challenges facing South Carolina’s highest-need school communities — accelerating economic mobility and academic achievement while also helping young people and their families live better lives. Recognizing the importance of community partnerships, Dr. Green lead the effort to establish The Fairfield County School District Foundation. In keeping with community partnerships, Dr. Green was instrumental in reestablishing the Fairfield County Hall of Fame.

Each year, a panel of community partners selects individuals who have made significant contributions to the district and achievements that positively impact Fairfield County. Dr. Green holds Bachelor of Science, Masters of Arts, Masters of Education, and Doctorate in Education Leadership degrees from the University of South Carolina. A Riley Leadership Institute Fellow, Dr. Green is involved in several civic and professional organizations including the Omicron Iota Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Iota Boule’ of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Providence Health Board of Trustees, Board of Directors for Midlands Education & Business Alliance, United Way of The Midlands Board of Directors, Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Most recently, Dr. Green was named the 2021 South Carolina Superintendent of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators and the 2020 University of South Carolina
